The Macchiaioli at Palazzo Reale: a major retrospective in Milan

Until 14 June 2026, Palazzo Reale in Milan hosts a comprehensive exhibition on the Macchiaioli, the 19th-century Italian painting movement that redefined landscape, light and everyday subjects. The show presents over one hundred works from leading Italian museums and private collections, offering an updated perspective on the group and its ties to the Risorgimento era.

Curated by Francesca Dini, Elisabetta Matteucci and Fernando Mazzocca, the exhibition highlights the innovative «macchia» approach: painting observed from life, a focus on natural light, realism and the depiction of popular and patriotic themes. The project is part of the cultural events linked to the Milan–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, turning the sporting occasion into an opportunity to engage with Italy’s artistic heritage.

What to see

The exhibition is organized into nine sections tracing the Macchiaioli from 1848 to 1872. Key topics include:

  • Risorgimento roots: the 1848 uprisings as a foundational moment;
  • En plein air painting and the «seen from life» approach to landscape and everyday scenes;
  • Portraiture and domestic life as renewed subjects;
  • Civic engagement expressed through works with strong political and social content.

Highlights include works by Giovanni Fattori, Silvestro Lega and Telemaco Signorini, notably La toilette del mattino by Signorini and important military scenes by Fattori that reveal the connection between painting and civic commitment.

Loans and partnerships

The exhibition features loans from major Italian institutions — such as the Pinacoteca di Brera, the Uffizi Galleries, Palazzo Pitti, the Museum of the Risorgimento and the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan — as well as private collections. The project is realized through collaboration with cultural partners who supported its production.

Why visit

This retrospective is an opportunity to rediscover a pivotal chapter of Italian art: the Macchiaioli were both technical innovators and commentators on the political and social changes of their age. The show allows visitors to follow the movement’s stylistic development and compare it with works by contemporaries who shaped the period’s artistic debate.
