From 10 April to 28 May 2026 Galleria Zema hosts Everything Is Bright Here, the first solo exhibition in Italy by photographer Lucia Buricelli. The show gathers images shot in New York between 2019 and 2025 and offers a sensory-critical reading of contemporary urban life.
Buricelli's work is marked by saturated colours and direct flash, formal choices that compress space and intensify the surface of the real. Colour functions here not merely as description but as a perceptual device that directs and sometimes unsettles the viewer, highlighting the visual excess typical of global cities.
Through close framing and a rapid photographic gesture, the series captures fleeting urban details that take on an almost theatrical quality. The works probe the symbolic dynamics of urban space — accumulation, attraction, dispersion — offering a critical depiction of the city as a landscape shaped by consumerist logics.
Some pieces come from the project Don’t Feed the Animals (2024), where the artist considers the impact of advanced capitalism on the urban environment. The exhibition's title suggests a brightness that does not equal clarity but rather an intensified visibility that exposes the excess of contemporary imagery and prompts viewers to question how we look at, consume and inhabit images of public space.
Short bio: Born in Venice in 1994, Lucia Buricelli trained in Italy and the United States, studying photojournalism at the International Center of Photography in New York. Evolving from street photography, her practice is distinguished by strong colour and flash use; her images have appeared in international publications and been shown in exhibitions across Europe and the U.S.
