Paglicci Cave: conference on 23 May 2026 for relaunch and UNESCO nomination

Date: 23 May 2026

Venue: Auditorium Ex-Palestra Comunale, Via Genova, Rignano Garganico (FG), Italy

Why attend

Paglicci Cave is among Italy's most important prehistoric archives: more than 45,000 finds span roughly 500,000 to 11,000 years ago, including cave paintings, graffiti, human remains and numerous stone and bone tools. The 23 May public event aims to back the UNESCO nomination and launch a renewed plan for scientific research, protection and sustainable enjoyment of the site.

Event goals

  • Support Paglicci Cave's candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage status.
  • Secure the area and restart scientific excavations.
  • Complete the expansion work and define management for the Gargano Paleolithic Museum.
  • Restart guided visits and cultural activities for both the public and scholars.

Program highlights (23 May 2026)

  • 09:00 – 13:00: guided excursion across the Gargano landscape to contextualize the site.
  • 17:00 – 20:00: conference and cultural event at the Auditorium Ex-Palestra Comunale with contributions from local authorities, archaeologists, speleologists and associations; closing with a musical performance.
