Venzone Grand Prix: sport that elevates the village

The first edition of the Venzone Grand Prix turned the streets of the historic town into a showcase for sport and territorial promotion. The race, opening the Trofeo Friuli 2026, brought together about 400 participants — elite runners, amateurs and promising juniors — who ran past landmarks such as Porta Gemona and the town moat.

Speaking in Piazza Municipio, regional councillor for Finance Barbara Zilli emphasized how outdoor sporting events are effective tools to highlight historical and scenic assets of small towns while encouraging youth participation and healthy habits.

Practical and organisational details

The competition featured a 5.05 km course and multiple categories, from the junior promotional Despar Kids Run to the men’s and women’s races including Master over‑55 classes. The municipal administration and local sports associations handled logistics and safety.

  • Location: Venzone (Piazza Municipio and historic center)
  • Participants: about 400 (elite, amateurs, juniors)
  • Course: 5.05 km, passing Porta Gemona and the moat
  • Categories: Despar Kids Run, men's and women's races, Masters
  • Organisers: Municipality of Venzone, FIDAL, ASD Prealpi Giulie

Zilli publicly thanked mayor Mauro Valent, FIDAL officials and the ASD Prealpi Giulie leadership — including president Marco Rossetto and secretary Ugo Tomat — as well as volunteers and medical staff who secured the route.

Why this matters for small towns

Sporting events like the Venzone Grand Prix help promote historic centers, attract visitors and support the local economy, while fostering healthy lifestyles among young people. The successful debut points to opportunities for future initiatives that combine culture, sport and community development.
