Giuseppe Chiari 1926–2026: “Score for a Museum” at MAMbo

Dates: 29 May – 27 September 2026. Opening: Thursday 28 May 2026, 18:00–21:00 (free entry for the opening event).

MAMbo presents the first complete retrospective of Giuseppe Chiari in a public institution, produced for the centenary of the artist’s birth. Curated by Lorenzo Balbi and Mario Chiari, the show offers a transversal critical reading of Chiari’s practice, emphasizing his experiments at the intersection of sound, image and performance, and his intermittent relationship with Fluxus.

What to see and why visit

The exhibition avoids a strictly sectional display, proposing instead a route that follows the critical and chronological development of Chiari’s work. Highlights include:

  • Performance and musical materials: scores, documents and works exploring sound–image relations.
  • Historical and critical framing: sections that situate Chiari in the 1960s–70s and trace later developments.
  • Connections with Fluxus: perspectives on contemporary experiences while maintaining Chiari’s independence from programmatic affiliations.

Practical information

  • Venue: MAMbo – Museum of Modern Art of Bologna, Via Don Giovanni Minzoni 14, Bologna.
  • Opening hours: Monday closed; Tuesday–Wednesday 14:00–19:00; Thursday 14:00–20:00; Friday–Sunday 10:00–19:00.
  • Tickets: check the museum website for prices and booking details.
  • Contacts: phone and email available from the museum for information and reservations.

The retrospective is suitable for visitors familiar with Chiari’s work and for those discovering his cross-disciplinary approach to art, music and performance. Consult the museum’s website for guided tours and related events.
