FAI Spring Days in Rome: sites open on March 21 and 22

Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March Rome takes part in the FAI Spring Days, a national event focused on discovering and promoting cultural heritage. For two days, visitors can enter historic complexes and palaces that are usually closed to the public.

Highlights of the scheduled openings include:

  • Ministry of Education and Merit Palace – an imposing early 20th-century complex designed by architect Cesare Bazzani in 1912.
  • Supreme Court of Cassation (the "Palazzaccio") – a landmark example of late 19th-century monumental architecture in Rome.
  • Palazzo della Cancelleria – one of the earliest large Renaissance buildings in the city.
  • Villa Lante on the Janiculum – a 16th-century villa now hosting cultural institutions.
  • Palazzo Corrodi on the Tiber – a historic building in the Campo Marzio district overlooking the river.

Visits are led by FAI volunteers and the "Apprentice Guides", high school students trained to present historical insights and anecdotes about the places. The event aims to reveal corners of the city often unknown even to locals.

Donations and bookings: visits involve a voluntary contribution to support conservation and enhancement projects. Check the FAI official website for up-to-date information on schedules, access rules and possible reservations before you go.

Practical tips for visitors:

  • Arrive a little early: entrances may be limited to manage visitor flows.
  • Bring an ID if required for access to institutional buildings.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: tours often include walking and internal staircases.
  • Confirm any temporary restrictions due to security or restoration works.

The FAI Spring Days are a chance to step beyond the monumental façades and discover the interiors and stories of Rome's historic sites: this time, you can simply walk in and see for yourself.
