National Historic Houses Day in Lazio - 24 May 2026

On Sunday 24 May 2026 over 40 private historic houses across the Lazio region will open to the public as part of the National Historic Houses Day. The initiative promotes private historic architecture as a shared cultural resource and allows free visits to palaces, villas, castles and urban courtyards.

Theme for 2026

This year’s edition is titled "Guardians of the Future. A living heritage for shared value", highlighting the role of preservation and responsible enjoyment of historic residences for local communities and future generations.

Highlights and announcements

  • Villa Lubin (within Villa Borghese, Rome) will be opened to the public for the first time during the event.
  • Volunteers from the Touring Club Italiano will be present in several houses to guide visitors, under a national agreement.

Open sites and suggested routes

The openings cover the provinces of Rome, Viterbo, Rieti, Frosinone and Latina. Notable examples include:

  • Castello and Gardens of Ruspoli in Vignanello (VT)
  • Rocca Farnese in Ischia di Castro (VT)
  • Castello di Fumone (FR) and Castello Teofilatto in Torre Cajetani (FR)
  • Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano (RM)
  • Historic palaces and courtyards in Rome: Palazzo Torlonia, Palazzo Taverna, Palazzo Sforza Cesarini
  • Villas of the Castelli Romani: Tenuta di Pietra Porzia (Frascati), Villa del Cardinale (Rocca di Papa)

Practical information

  • When: Sunday 24 May 2026
  • Where: over 40 residences across Lazio (Rome, Viterbo, Rieti, Frosinone, Latina)
  • Admission: free (some visits may require booking or be organized in timed slots)

Visitor tips

  • Arrive early at the most popular sites to secure a visit slot.
  • Follow the instructions of site custodians and respect house rules during visits.
