European Parks Day: hikes in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park

To mark European Parks Day and World Biodiversity Day, the Tuscan Archipelago National Park is running a programme of guided hikes and educational activities for residents and visitors. The events showcase typical landscapes, native species and conservation practices.

Schedule

  • Sunday 17 May 2026 — Elba Island: Hike to Torre del Giove
    Meeting point: Casa del Parco di Rio, 15:00. Duration: about 2 hours 30 minutes. Difficulty: medium. Route through holm oak woods and Mediterranean scrub along trail 259 to the historic defensive tower (1459) with views over the Piombino Channel. Free activity, reservation required.
  • Saturday 23 May 2026 — Elba Island: Walk on the Lacona Dune
    Meeting point: Info Park Lacona, 15:00. Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes. Difficulty: easy. Focus on native species and invasive plants; children's workshop and data collection via iNaturalist for the "Lacona Dune Biodiversity" project. Free, reservation required.
  • Saturday 23 May 2026 — Capraia Island: Hike to the Pozzalamone Caves
    Meeting point: CEA “La Salata”, 11:30. Duration: about 6 hours. Difficulty: medium. Route includes the former agricultural penal colony, natural shelters and the spring trail up to the Mortola fork. Paid activity, booking required.
  • Sunday 24 May 2026 — Elba Island: San Cerbone Dry Stone Walls
    Meeting point: Marciana, Cabinovia car park, 15:00. Duration: 3 hours. Difficulty: easy to medium. Workshop on enhancement and guided interventions on dry stone walls (UNESCO intangible heritage). Free, reservation required.

Practical information

Participation: many events are free but need prior booking; some hikes have a participation fee. Check registration procedures and participant limits before signing up.

Difficulty level: easy to medium. Consider the route based on your fitness and communicate any special needs when booking.

Recommended gear: hiking shoes or sturdy footwear, water, sun protection, layered clothing. For some activities a smartphone with the iNaturalist app is required.
