Study day on the Angelo Morbelli archive

Date: 29 May 2026
Venue: Conference Hall, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Tortona

The Pinacoteca Divisionismo of Tortona organises a study day dedicated to the Angelo Morbelli archive, a collection of letters and documents acquired by the museum in 2022. The largely unpublished material sheds light on new aspects of Morbelli's career and on the promotion of Divisionism at national and international levels.

The event is curated by Giovanna Ginex, scientific advisor to the Pinacoteca, with the collaboration of archivist Alessia Francone, who will present a paper on the archive's history and structure. Presentations will compare documents held in different institutions and propose fresh readings of understudied topics.

Scheduled speakers:

  • Silvestra Bietoletti, art historian
  • Sandra Berresford, curator of the Bistolfi Archive (Museo Civico and Gipsoteca Bistolfi, Casale Monferrato)
  • Alessandro Botta, professor at the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti, Turin
  • Stefania Circosta, archival officer (Superintendency for Archives and Bibliography, Piedmont and Aosta Valley)
  • Cinzia Lacchia, conservator (Fondazione Museo Francesco Borgogna, Vercelli)
  • Stefano Meriana, historian and restorer
  • Nicol Maria Mocchi, associate professor (University of Salerno)

This initiative is part of a broader programme to enhance the Pinacoteca's archival and artistic holdings. The museum displays more than 150 works that trace the development of Divisionism, including eight works by Angelo Morbelli. The archive documents the artist's efforts to participate in major international exhibitions and to establish Divisionist painting in the European context.

The proceedings of the study day will be published in 2027 in both Italian and English as part of the Pinacoteca's scientific series, providing an important resource for future research on Morbelli and Divisionism.
