Day of Legality in Genoa: safeguarding the historic centre and monuments

• 31% of tertiary-sector businesses in Northwest Italy reported a deterioration in safety compared with the previous year.
• 62.2% of retail businesses reported shoplifting incidents; more than one in four affected outlets experience these events daily or several times a week.
• Increases were noted in online fraud, assaults and vandalism; nearly one in four businesses reported issues involving youth gangs in their area.
• 90% of businesses in the Northwest have invested in security measures such as CCTV and alarm systems.

The research underlines a direct link between vacant or closed shops and the rise of microcrime and urban decay—threats that also jeopardize monument sites and historic buildings. During the meeting, local commanders and security officers outlined prevention and monitoring strategies tailored for high-value historic zones.
