Genoa metro funds: MIT clarifies and allows project resubmission

The situation. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Mobility stated that the €74.5 million for Genoa's metro extension were not permanently withdrawn: the pause follows the application of new rules for the Infrastructure Fund, which require a legally binding commitment within set deadlines.

What the municipality can do. The ministry's note indicates the city can re-submit the project in future annual allocations after updating the financial plan and project documentation. Improving priority chances may require integrating the funding with additional local resources.

  • Administrative point: the suspension stems from procedural fund requirements rather than a definitive political cancellation.
  • Action for the city: update the project documentation and consider additional financing.
  • Cultural access: the extension (Certosa–Rivarolo and Brignole–piazza Martinez) is significant for access to museums, theatres and cultural hubs in the city.

Why it matters for culture. Improving metro connections affects public access to exhibitions, performances and heritage sites, supporting cultural participation and urban tourism. Resubmitting the project with an updated budget could enhance accessibility to Genoa's cultural circuit.

The outcome now depends on technical timelines and administrative choices: the municipality may present a revised request, which will be assessed through ordinary programming procedures for resource allocation.
