Genius Loci: rediscovering Etruscan legacy across the museums of Prato

Genius Loci is a cultural program that highlights the dynamism of Etruscan heritage through an extensive schedule of exhibitions, workshops, lectures, family activities and themed displays. The initiative, promoted by the Rete Musei di Prato, aims to bring archaeological and cultural knowledge closer to the public.

Participating museums and project approach

The network connects museums and cultural centres with diverse expertise—archaeology, art, natural sciences and textile technology—to provide varied perspectives on ancient life. Participating institutions include:

  • Archaeological Museum of Artimino – expanded displays of ivory finds and research on the Montefortini tumulus;
  • Soffici and 20th-Century Italian Art Museum – contemporary exhibition inspired by Etruscan themes;
  • MuMat – Textile Machinery Museum, Vernio – exhibitions on weaving and dyeing in Etruscan times;
  • Leonetto Tintori House-Museum – painting workshops focusing on ancient pigments;
  • Italian Museum of Planetary Sciences – routes exploring Etruscan cosmology and celestial beliefs;
  • Center for Natural Sciences – studies on divination practices such as avian augury;
  • Badia Museum of Vaiano – explorations of Etruscan tastes and culinary traditions;
  • Museum of Deportation and Resistance – critical perspectives on historical appropriation and myth-making.

Key events and audience activities

The program includes targeted activities for different audiences: guided tours, academic talks, hands-on family workshops, demonstrations and book presentations. Notable offerings include:

  • Easter with the Etruscans (April 2-3, Artimino Museum) – themed visits, games and creative workshops focused on ivory artifacts from the Montefortini tumulus;
  • Lecture series – academic talks on various facets of Etruscan life delivered by university scholars and museum specialists;
  • Family workshops – practical activities such as wooden loom weaving and clay jewelry making;
  • Historical tastings – sensory experiences exploring Etruscan cuisine with educational context;
  • Themed tours – focused visits on topics like ancient lighting, animal iconography and restored ivory collections.

Practical information and bookings

For the full program, booking procedures and up-to-date information, consult the Rete Musei di Prato website or contact each museum directly. Several activities require prior reservation and have limited places.

Useful contacts (examples):

  • Archaeological Museum of Artimino – contact for guided visits and workshops;
  • Museum of Deportation and Resistance – information on book presentations and public talks;
