Gela joins 'Comuni.italiani.it' project to promote local roots and identity

The Municipality of Gela has officially joined the national project “Comuni.italiani.it: Roots, Community and Territory”, promoted by Fondazione Italiani.it ETS. The initiative focuses on enhancing historical, cultural and identity assets of Italian territories and reinforcing ties with fellow citizens living abroad.

Following a resolution approved by the municipal council, the adhesion takes the form of a Memorandum of Understanding that, according to the administration, does not entail costs for the municipal budget. The collaboration aims to develop cultural activities, digital tools and territorial promotion projects addressed to both residents and Gelese communities overseas.

The Foundation, a non-profit organization with civic and cultural aims, has experience in promoting migration memory and roots tourism. Potential areas of action include:

• digitization and enhancement of local archives and historical records;
• mapping cultural routes and itineraries related to urban and archaeological heritage;
• storytelling initiatives and oral history projects to recover migration narratives;
• cultural events and workshops dedicated to local traditions and regional cuisine;
• digital platforms to connect the local community with Gelese communities abroad.

Planned activities are intended not only to boost tourism promotion but also to foster social and economic opportunities through participatory territorial planning. The adhesion offers Gela a chance to strengthen local identity and open new channels of dialogue with its communities beyond national borders.
