Flavia Daniele presents a photographic practice that moves beyond depiction: at the I Biennale of the Anthropocene (Rome, May 2022) she exhibited a piece where photography and the physical substance of the subject merge.
The work shown on 31 May 2022 was created from a cross-section of a tree trunk, processed through sanding and controlled burning to reveal the natural growth rings. These marks were then used as a matrix for printing, producing an image that retains the wood’s material memory and evokes a form of natural “fossilization.”
The project focuses on the trace of time and the imprint of human intervention on the environment, transforming photography into a tangible document and a critical reflection on the present.
Daniele’s practice bridges conceptual research and material experimentation: among her notable experiences is participation in the RUFA Contest 2019 with the project One Second of Eternity, which received a special award from RAI Cinema. She has also worked across fashion and publishing, producing analog photography and taking on art direction roles that consolidate her visual language.
For audiences and cultural professionals, the work is a clear example of how contemporary photography can be used to investigate environmental transformations and the relationship between matter, memory and time.
