Italian Film Festivals: Audiences and Jobs Surge, but Culture Ministry's Funding Uncertainty Threatens Momentum

Italy's festival circuit is experiencing a strong upswing: the recent Bif&st in Bari reached 50,000 attendees across screenings, talks and musical events, while the Association of Italian Film Festivals (Afic) counts over 120 events that attract more than 2 million spectators annually.

Beyond audience figures, festivals support an important ecosystem: they provide work for thousands of professionals, promote independent cinema and create an alternative distribution channel that renews genres and talent. Festivalgoers tend to be younger and more educated than regular cinema audiences (average age 37.5 years, 63% degree holders), helping to cultivate the audience of the future.

Nevertheless, the sector faces uncertainty over public funding: the Ministry of Culture (Mic) allocates about 1% of the single national film fund to festivals, resources that have been limited and often late (7 million in 2025, 6 million planned for 2026). Organisers report difficulties in planning and call for greater predictability.

One proposed solution is multi-year (three-year) calls that would provide budgetary certainty and time for proper organisation: measures that insiders say could preserve the festivals' positive effects on local economies, from cultural tourism to place promotion.

  • Key events: Bif&st (Bari), Cinema Ritrovato and Biografilm (Bologna), Far East Film Festival (Udine), Pordenone Silent Film Festival, Nuovo Cinema (Pesaro), Taormina Film Festival, Ischia Film Festival, Giffoni Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Rome Film Fest, Torino Film Festival, Matera Film Festival, Noir in Festival (Milan), Capri Hollywood, Trieste Film Festival.

The picture that emerges is of a "machine of passion" that mobilises diverse audiences and generates cultural and economic value. The sector is nevertheless asking for stable mechanisms and timely allocations to avoid slowing down a growth that has turned festivals into major attractions for communities across Italy.
