The morning offered guided, multisensory activities aimed at making the archaeological heritage more approachable through supported visits and participatory experiences.

  • Date: May 14, 2026
  • Participants: 10 users from the Multifunctional Center for Disabled People, accompanied by staff
  • Partners: G. Buonajuto Civic Library and Boetheia Onlus Cooperative
  • Activities: walk along the decumani, visits to domus and workshops, exploration of the Ancient Beach area, shared readings and guided observation activities
  • Admission: free for participants within the initiative
  • Location: Corso Resina, 187, 80056 Ercolano (NA), Italy

Operators accompanied the group through the main streets of the site and into houses and workshops, combining material displays with collective readings and hands-on observation tasks designed to foster independence and engagement. The format emphasized direct involvement and clear, accessible explanations.

Goals and social value

  • Enhance cultural accessibility and social inclusion at archaeological sites.
  • Encourage reading and interest in heritage among young people, aligned with the local Reading Pact.
  • Develop operational partnerships between cultural institutions and social services.

The Herculaneum initiative can serve as a replicable model for other archaeological sites seeking to combine cultural programming with local social services, focusing on accessibility, staff training and inclusive pathways.
