Earth Hour 2026 in Abruzzo: one hour of darkness for the planet

On Saturday 28 March 2026, from 20:30 to 21:30, Abruzzo takes part in Earth Hour: a symbolic hour of lights-out to highlight climate urgency and the protection of natural areas. Municipalities, parks and local groups will host stargazing sessions, workshops and community activities.

Where it happens

All provincial capitals in Abruzzo will join by switching off key monuments. Notable sites include:

  • L'Aquila – Fontana Luminosa will go dark;
  • Pescara – Civic Tower switched off;
  • Teramo – Fontana dei Due Leoni turned off;
  • Chieti – reduced lighting in Piazza G.B. Vico;
  • National Parks (Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise; Maiella) – lights reduced at managed facilities;
  • Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area and the University Museum of Chieti – events and light reductions.

Program highlights

  • Calanchi di Atri Nature Reserve – 20:30 lights-off in the square, followed by guided sky observation for families.
  • Gole del Sagittario (Anversa degli Abruzzi) – afternoon info point and creative workshop, then evening lights-out and group photo.
  • Lago di Serranella – short trails walk and recycled-material lantern workshop in the afternoon.
  • University Museum of Chieti – talk and photo exhibition on tourism and nature conservation.
  • RIexperia (Atessa) – interactive digital path, climatology talk, candlelit eco-aperitif and public lights-off at 20:30.
  • Civitella del Tronto – student-led activities, multisensory forest walk and lights-off at the fortress.
  • Roseto and Borsacchio – daytime beach and habitat clean-ups.

How to take part (practical tips)

  • Turn off non-essential lights between 20:30 and 21:30 on 28 March.
  • Join a local event: stargazing, guided walk or a recycling workshop.
  • Use the hour to do something helpful for nature: pick up litter, join a community activity or learn about local conservation projects.
  • Support local climate actions and sign campaigns that call for stronger environmental policies.

Why it matters

Earth Hour is a unifying, symbolic action that connects communities, institutions and protected areas to demand real responses to climate change. In Abruzzo it brings together monuments, parks and citizens: participating is a way to raise awareness, learn and contribute to ongoing conservation efforts.

Practical advice: check event details locally before you go, bring a low-intensity torch for movements after dark and follow park rules (stay on marked trails and carry out any waste).
