“Sunday at the Museum”: Roman Theatre of Benevento — update and schedule

The Roman Theatre of Benevento participates in the "Sunday at the Museum" initiative with a weekend of archaeological and cultural events. Please note the program has been partially revised for organizational reasons.

  • Dates: Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3, 2026.
  • Update: activities planned for Saturday, May 2 have been canceled due to a bereavement affecting one of the participating associations.
  • Sunday, May 3 — main events and access:
    • Free entry as part of the "Sunday at the Museum" initiative.
    • 11:30 — inside the Theatre: presentation of the volume I Longobardi e le Streghe (edited by Alessio Fragnito and Vincenzo Grella). The meeting includes readings and commentary on sources that shaped the legend of the Witches of Benevento and the magical Walnut Tree.
    • 11:00–13:00 — public performance: La Pax Romana e la costruzione della Prima Europa (part of the historical reenactment program; free participation).
    • 17:30Reading at the Roman Theatre: waiting for sunset. A reading-party format encouraging attendees to bring a book, switch off phones, and read in silence; participants may leave a written reflection at the end.
  • The reenactment and experimental archaeology project involves groups from several Italian regions and is overseen scientifically by historian Gastone Breccia (University of Pavia).
  • Saturday's planned workshops and practical exercises, previously intended to be open to visitors with regular ticketing, are now suspended following the cancellation.

The Roman Theatre confirms its role as a living space for research and public engagement. Visitors are encouraged to respect the archaeological site and follow any further directions from the Theatre's management for schedule or logistical updates.
