The Musei di San Salvatore in Lauro in Rome is presenting an exhibition dedicated to Dante Ferretti, the renowned production designer and costume designer. Curated by Raffaele Curi, the show highlights the breadth of Ferretti's work through a selection of roughly forty sketches that stand as independent works of art.
The displays include chalk and charcoal drawings, mixed-media pieces, collages and preparatory studies that document six decades of collaboration with directors such as Pasolini, Fellini, Scorsese and Tim Burton. Rather than mere preparatory tools, these sketches are presented as original visual statements that reveal the underlying ideas behind cinematic sets.
The exhibition also sheds light on Ferretti’s working method: reading the screenplay, isolating to sketch, and presenting finished proposals to directors. This curatorial approach helps visitors appreciate how production design shapes cinematic storytelling and visual identity.
Ideal for those interested in scenography, costume and visual planning, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to study the creative process of a master who has shaped international cinematic imagery for decades.
