Carafa Historical Procession in Roccella Jonica: tradition and village enhancement

The historic centre of Roccella Jonica hosted the V edition of the Carafa Historical Procession, featuring more than 300 reenactors and drawing over 4,000 visitors. The event celebrated Fabrizio Carafa (1574–1629), the town's first prince from 1594.

Organised by the municipal administration and the Department of Culture with support from a technical-scientific committee, the procession blends theatrical re-enactment and historical research to highlight the village's heritage.

Route and key moments

• Start: Church of San Giuseppe, commemorating the founding of the Church of the Most Holy Conception.
• Along the route: Via Vittorio Emanuele with a stop at Villa Carafa to recall the Knights Hospitaller priory.
• San Vittorio Square: depiction of the founding of the Monastery of the Minims.
• Finish in the Borgo: symbolic delivery of the “Collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece” to the Prince and tribute to the Terra della Fabrizia.
