Corfinio strengthens its role on the Cammino Grande di Celestino
Corfinio continues to enhance its religious and cultural assets with targeted works on the rest area located in front of the Cathedral of San Pelino. The project is part of the wider Cammino Grande di Celestino, an itinerary connecting L'Aquila to Sulmona that attracts pilgrims and visitors interested in spirituality, history and landscape.
In collaboration with the Special Office for the Reconstruction of Earthquake-Affected Municipalities (USRC) and the Maiella National Park, the rehabilitation of the rest area has been approved. The intervention aims to make the space more dignified, functional and welcoming for walkers and pilgrims.
Planned works
- Overall refurbishment of the rest area in front of the cathedral;
- Replacement of worn picnic benches and updating of outdoor furnishings;
- Measures to improve usability and accessibility for pilgrims;
- Actions to highlight the site's historical and spiritual significance.
The rest area is part of the official route and is adjacent to the Oratory of Sant'Alessandro I, an important place for local devotion and religious history. The upgrade targets not only slow and religious tourism but also the strengthening of Corfinio's cultural identity and that of the Peligna area.
Why this matters
The initiative reinforces Corfinio's position among key stops on the Cammino Grande di Celestino, promoting:
- better reception for visitors and pilgrims;
- enhanced access to historical and religious sites;
- promotion of local heritage for cultural and touristic development.
The municipality acknowledged the technical partners involved, underlining that the project represents a further step in the enhancement of the area's ecclesiastical and landscape heritage.
