Corfinio launches UNESCO nomination for the memory of the Italic Civilization

The Municipality of Corfinio has started an institutional campaign to secure UNESCO recognition for the historical memory connected to the Italic Civilization and the Italic League. The initiative, called "Ove Italia Nacque", highlights the city's central role during the Social War (91–88 BC), when Corfinio was declared a capital and the term "Italia" first appeared on local coinage.

The nomination combines scholarly research with measures to protect and promote both tangible and intangible heritage: the goal is to safeguard archaeological traces, recover cultural practices linked to the Italic League, and communicate these themes to a wider public.

Goals and strategy

• Document and enhance the historical legacy and cultural practices related to the Italic League;
• Establish a collaborative network among local authorities, universities, heritage offices and research centers for a shared scientific pathway;
• Promote the inclusive and representative values of the period through educational programmes and community activities;
• Combine archaeological and landscape enhancement with measures to improve public access and enjoyment.

On-site interventions

In parallel with the nomination process, the municipal administration has implemented tangible measures to improve site visibility and accessibility. Notably, a monumental lighting system was installed for the Italic mausoleums along the Tiburtina Valeria and the Corfiniense provincial road. Funded with support from private partners and local businesses, this intervention enhances the nocturnal visibility of the monuments and restores their architectural presence.
