Collalto Sabino, the connected village of the Sabina

Perched at nearly 1,000 metres in the green Sabina hills, Collalto Sabino is a small village that combines historical heritage with contemporary revitalization efforts. In 2026 the town received recognition for a project that improved digital connectivity while preserving its rural identity.

What to see

  • Baronial Castle: the historical heart of the village, with towers and battlements; the summit offers views of Gran Sasso, Terminillo and Maiella.
  • City walls and old town: cobbled lanes, stone portals and corners that tell the story of the village's defensive past.
  • Piazza della Podesteria and Palazzo Latini: the octagonal fountain and baroque elegance showcase the civic side of the town.
  • Churches of San Gregorio Magno and Santa Lucia: intimate sacred spaces with frescoes and contemplative atmospheres.

Events and traditions

The village hosts initiatives that promote local culture and community. Notably, the Borgo Connesso Award on 18 April 2026 recognized the municipality for its territorial digitalization strategy. During winter the historic centre becomes the Santa Claus Village, with markets, children's activities, workshops in ancient cellars and traditional food offerings.

Food and drink

Local cuisine is a strong identity marker: try the corn gnocchetti and the "pizza de 'nfrasco" grilled over coals. During festivals, local cellars and the Pro Loco serve traditional dishes and artisanal products.

How to get there and practical tips

  • Location: on the border between Lazio and Abruzzo, about 70 km from Rome and 40 km from Rieti, inside the Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia Reserve.
  • By car: the most convenient option; take the A24 Rome-Teramo, exit Carsoli-Oricola, and follow signs for SS4 towards Rieti.
  • Parking: parking areas are available near the village; during busy periods it's best to arrive in the morning.
  • Best time to visit: spring and autumn for mild weather and clear views; winter for the festive atmosphere, but check road conditions.
  • Accessibility: medieval streets are cobbled and hilly—comfortable shoes are recommended.

Collalto Sabino is an ideal destination for a short break combining history, authentic tastes and mountain scenery, balancing tradition with local development projects.
