Civita, Morano and Oriolo: three Orange Flag villages in Calabria to

Autore: Redazione 19/04/2026 06:40

Why visit these villages

The villages of Civita, Morano Calabro and Oriolo have received the Orange Flag recognition from the Touring Club Italiano. They stand out for quality hospitality, preserved heritage and sustainable practices, making them great choices for cultural and slow tourism.

Civita

Civita (Çifti in Arbëreshë) traces its rebirth to Albanian refugees in the 15th century. The village sits between the Pollino massif and the Ionian coast, where language and ritual traditions still shape daily life.

  • Highlights: the colorful Kodra houses and unusual chimneys; the compact historic centre clinging to the rock.
  • Nature: the Raganello Gorge, one of southern Italy’s deepest canyons, crossed by a stream and marked by the famous Devil’s Bridge — a top spot for hiking and landscape photography.
  • Traditions: the Vallje ritual dances, performed during the Easter period, preserve Arbëreshë heritage.

Morano Calabro

Morano unfolds like a hilltop nativity scene, with clustered houses rising toward the Norman-Swabian castle. Stone passages and carved portals reveal a layered history.

  • Must-see: the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena with its polychrome maiolica domes and the Bartolomeo Vivarini polyptych in the chapel of San Silvestro.
  • Events: a May celebration known as the Festa della Bandiera honors the patron saint and local customs.
  • Note: the village’s perspectives have long attracted artists and visitors.

Oriolo

Oriolo overlooks the Valle del Ferro from its promontory. The medieval castle, former home to noble families, preserves a richly painted dome and commands wide views to the Ionian coast.

  • Highlights: the keep and the decorated chamber with the Triumph of Apollo, an uncommon late-Renaissance work in the region.
  • Film interest: the atmospheric castle and streets have been used as film locations, enhancing the village’s cinematic appeal.

Practical tips

  • Best time to go: spring and early autumn for pleasant weather and local events; avoid peak summer for a quieter visit.
  • Getting around: these are best reached by car or local connections; bring comfortable shoes for steep alleys.
  • Bring: water, a camera, and local maps or a guide to uncover lesser-known viewpoints and artisan shops.
  • Respect the environment: follow marked trails in natural areas like the Raganello Gorge and support local businesses to help preserve these communities.

Suggested itinerary

Weekend plan: day 1 in Civita to explore the village and gorge; day 2 in Morano for art and panorama; include Oriolo for a castle visit and coastal views if time allows.

Useful note: check opening times and local event calendars before traveling, as many celebrations and exhibitions are seasonal and enhance the experience of local crafts and cuisine.
