Spring is ideal for hiking: longer daylight, milder temperatures and blooming landscapes. Here are five diverse routes across Italy with practical notes on difficulty, length and what to bring.
Cammino di Oropa (Piedmont) – A pilgrimage-style route from Santhià to the Sanctuary of Oropa that runs through forests and historic villages. About 70 km in total; typically completed in 3–4 days. Difficulty: beginner-friendly if split into multiple stages. Practical tip: plan short daily stages, wear lightweight hiking shoes and carry enough water for exposed sections.
Monte Conero (Marche) – An area with around 18 marked trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging climbs, set in Mediterranean scrub and overlooking the Adriatic. Practical tip: bring sunscreen, shoes with good traction for rocky sections, and a trail map.
Zingaro Nature Reserve (Sicily) – A wild coastal path of roughly 7 km between Castellammare del Golfo and San Vito Lo Capo, featuring coves and dense coastal vegetation. Difficulty: easy to moderate; paths are often sun-exposed. Practical tip: avoid midday heat, carry ample water and a sun hat.
Castelluccio di Norcia and the Plateaus (Umbria) – The Sibillini highlands offer varied routes, from flat walks to steeper mountain ascents; spectacular during the June flower bloom but beautiful throughout spring. Practical tip: check mountain weather forecasts, dress in layers and bring a camera for the views.
Mergoli–Vignanotica Nature Path (Gargano, Apulia) – "Path of Love" – A panoramic coastal trail between Baia delle Zagare and Vignanotica with white cliffs and rocky coves. Difficulty: medium-easy and family-friendly, though some stretches are steep or slippery. Practical tip: wear shoes with strong grip, watch children on exposed sections and be mindful of windy conditions.
General spring hiking tips: choose routes matching your fitness and local weather, carry water and energy snacks, pack a lightweight waterproof layer and use a map or GPS. Respect protected areas and local wildlife to preserve these landscapes for future visitors.
