Cinello: technology to enhance museum collections

Cinello is an Italian benefit company that applies digital technology to make art more accessible without compromising authenticity or value. The company created a patented method that links a digital file uniquely to the display monitor, enabling the production of certified digital serigraphs authorized by the owning museums.

The approach is intended as a complementary tool rather than a replacement: limited, controlled reproductions allow masterpieces to be shown where the physical work cannot travel or while originals are undergoing restoration or on loan.

  • Limited editions: serigraphs are produced in only nine copies, signed and certified by the museum director.
  • High visual quality: reproductions retain brushstroke detail and are paired with handcrafted frames made by Florentine artisans.
  • Authenticity and control: the model emphasizes certification and management to prevent digital piracy and counterfeiting.
  • Economic impact: 50% of revenues from exhibitions, loans and sales are returned to museums; to date the initiative has transferred over €300,000 to Italian institutions.

Concrete cases illustrate the model's potential: in Jeddah a show presented Leonardo's flying machines held in Italian collections; in New York works were exhibited that could not be physically reunited; in London a digital version of a fragile painting was shown instead of the original. During restorations, digital reproductions avoid empty gallery spaces and preserve visitors' experience.

From a regulatory perspective, digital serigraphs received formal recognition in 2023, legitimizing this mode of artistic fruition. Cinello aims to expand international collaborations to promote Italian art globally and to create new revenue streams for museums.

For museums, Cinello's digital approach offers practical benefits:

  • improved access to collections;
  • continuity of displays during loans and restoration work;
  • additional income sources without risking the original artwork.

For visitors and cultural professionals, controlled use of digital reproductions can broaden opportunities for enjoyment, conservation and dissemination of national artistic heritage.
