Cecilia Vicuña at Castello di Rivoli: "El glaciar ido"

Period: 29 April - 20 September 2026

The Castello di Rivoli presents the first solo museum exhibition in Italy by Chilean artist Cecilia Vicuña. Titled El glaciar ido (The vanished glacier / Il ghiacciaio scomparso), the show centers on a monumental installation that spans the museum's Manica Lunga: a horizontal quipu suspended in raw white wool, connecting Andean heritage, spirituality and contemporary environmental urgency.

Vicuña — whose multidisciplinary practice blends poetry, activism and craft — developed the project through a collaborative process that engaged local communities. Alongside the suspended quipu, a second, participatory weaving was created from plant-based materials gathered via an open call.

What to see and why

  • The suspended quipu: a large-scale work that uses knots and cords as devices of memory and relational mapping.
  • Environmental themes: the title refers to disappearing glaciers and the loss of water cycles, recurring concerns in the artist's work.
  • Poetics and participation: the exhibition stages ritual and collective practices, turning the museum into a shared space of sensitive exchange.

Practical information

  • Venue: Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, Rivoli (Turin)
  • Dates: 29/04/2026 – 20/09/2026
  • Curator: Marcella Beccaria
  • Visiting tips: allow 45–60 minutes to experience the installation and the participatory works at a contemplative pace.
  • Tickets and hours: check the museum's official website for current opening times and ticketing information.

The exhibition offers a clear example of how ancestral techniques and contemporary art can interrogate pressing issues: from the decline of emblematic species such as the condor to the disruption of hydrological cycles. Vicuña's quipu functions as a device of collective memory and care, inviting visitors to reflect on environmental fragility and alternative knowledge systems.
