The Cathedral of Lecce, officially named the Metropolitan Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and Saint Oronzo, is the main Catholic place of worship in Lecce and the mother church of the metropolitan archdiocese. It stands monumentally in Piazza del Duomo, at the heart of the historic city center, and is recognized as a national monument of Italy.
Originally built during the Norman period, it was completely reconstructed between 1659 and 1670 under Archbishop Luigi Pappacoda, with designs by Giuseppe Zimbalo. The current building, a masterpiece of southern Baroque art, rises on the site of earlier Romanesque cathedrals and serves as the focal point of Lecce’s monumental historic center.
Cathedral of Lecce: art and faith in the golden church
The main façade, though appearing simple, is carefully designed and features statues of four saints: Saint Januarius, Saint Peter, Saint Paul, and Saint Louis of Toulouse. The northern façade, in contrast, is more elaborate and theatrical, designed to welcome visitors entering from the square. It was conceived as a “triumphal arch,” with a central statue of Saint Oronzo, the city’s patron, flanked by statues of Saints Justus and Fortunatus in two niches.
A unique feature of the cathedral’s exterior is the color of the stone, which changes with the light throughout the day. At sunset, the stone takes on a delicate rosy hue, creating a play of light that makes it a true jewel of Lecce’s Baroque art.Inside, the cathedral follows a Latin cross plan with three naves divided by semi-columned pillars. The central nave and transept are covered by a wooden ceiling with carved coffers, enriched by inset paintings by Giuseppe da Brindisi. These depict the preaching of Saint Oronzo, protection from the plague, his martyrdom, and the Last Supper.
The cathedral houses twelve altars, each adorned with artworks by various artists. The main altar, made of marble and gilded bronze, is particularly striking. Beneath the transept and presbytery lies the crypt, built in 1500 atop a medieval predecessor, featuring 92 columns carved from Lecce stone. With its exuberant Baroque decoration and harmonious spatial composition, the Cathedral of Lecce stands as a testament to the extraordinary artistic flourishing of 17th-century Salento.
