History and description
Built between the 10th and 12th centuries on one of the seven hills of Cagliari, the castle was transformed under Berengario Carroz, who between 1325 and 1327 received the hill as a fief from the Aragonese. Over the centuries, it served different purposes: in 1652 it became a lazaretto, later a barracks for invalid soldiers, and in the 20th century a military radiotelegraph station. Rediscovered and restored, it is now a municipal center for art and culture. The fortress has a quadrangular layout with three corner towers, protected by a moat and accessible via a drawbridge. Inside, it once housed a medieval church dedicated to Saint Michael, along with numerous rooms and courtyards.
Curiosities
Originally built as a lookout point to guard against threats from both sea and land, today the castle enjoys a new life as part of a green urban park offering various activities.
