Italy has officially filed the nomination titled "The nativity scene, from origins to cultural tradition, and the art of creating it" to be inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The nomination is led by Italy in partnership with Spain and Paraguay, emphasizing the worldwide reach of this festive and artistic tradition.
The nativity scene tradition combines religious symbolism, artisanal skills and community practices: miniature models, scenic compositions and production techniques are passed down through generations and form part of the cultural identity of many Italian towns.
For towns such as Sansepolcro, home to one of Italy's major nativity art exhibitions, the nomination could bring increased cultural interest, support for artisans and new programming opportunities. Local organizers view the process as acknowledgement of the artistic tradition's continuity and quality.
The UNESCO evaluation takes time and involves multiple stages; a formal decision will follow the international assessment. Meanwhile, the nomination itself can strengthen safeguarding measures and training programs dedicated to preserving techniques and traditional knowledge.
