The municipalities of San Marcello Piteglio (lead), Abetone Cutigliano and Bagni di Lucca have started an inter-municipal project worth more than €500,000 to enhance the San Bartolomeo Way, a notable religious and natural itinerary in the Tuscan‑Emilian Apennines.
Funded through the national call for religious routes — where the proposal ranked fifteenth out of about 240 submissions — the plan combines trail maintenance with improvements in the villages crossed by the route, aiming both to ensure safe, accessible paths and to boost local quality of life and hospitality.
Works began in the first week of April 2026 and are scheduled to be completed within a year of the start. Organisers highlight the strong territorial partnership behind the project and its role in developing an integrated tourist offer across the Val di Lima.
For Bagni di Lucca, the intervention represents a concrete step to address longstanding issues on the local stretch of the Way, improving safety, usability and the appearance of the route while supporting community development.
