FAI Biodiversity Walks: 5 unmissable nature routes

The Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI) organises the Biodiversity Walks, a nationwide programme taking place on 23 and 24 May 2026. Guided walks and visits let participants explore local habitats, spot native species and learn conservation practices together with guides, biologists and park rangers.

Recommended routes

  • Liguria – Villa Rezzola (Lerici): an 18th-century villa with terraced gardens overlooking the Gulf of Poets. The guided walk crosses palms, cypresses and Mediterranean beds; it explains the role of water in the garden's ecosystem and concludes in the historic greenhouse with a honey tasting focused on pollinators. Visits: 23–24 May, at 11:00, 14:00 and 16:00.
  • Sardinia – Saline Conti Vecchi (Cagliari): a 2,700-hectare area of lagoon and salt pans, home to flamingos and rich birdlife. The trail is about 3 km on unpaved paths, ideal to learn about wetland ecology and the saltworks' industrial archaeology. Visit: Sunday 24 May, at 10:00.
  • Basilicata – The Sassi of Matera: an urban trekking route through the Sassi that highlights the relationship between landscape, architecture and urban biodiversity. The walk starts from Casa Noha and offers a naturalistic interpretation of the built environment.
  • Abruzzo – natural trails and protected areas: easy to moderate guided walks through parks and reserves of the Apennines, suitable for beginners and those seeking structured outdoor outings to observe mountain habitats.
  • Piedmont – excursions and historic gardens: visits to gardens and green areas focusing on native species, historic trees and conservation practices, with guided walks and educational workshops.
