Why visit Teramo's waterfalls in spring

Spring (April–June) is the best season to explore the waterfalls of Teramo province: snowmelt increases water flow, forests become lush and high-altitude flowers bloom. Longer daylight hours allow for morning or half-day hikes suitable for families, couples and slow travellers.

Morricana Waterfall – Bosco Martese (Rocca Santa Maria)

  • Height: about 40 m
  • Trailhead: Piazzale del Ceppo (Rocca Santa Maria), 1,580 m asl
  • Duration: around 45 minutes on foot from the parking area
  • Difficulty: hiking (E); elevation gain 442 m; total length 7.8 km round-trip

How to get there: drive to Rocca Santa Maria and follow signs to Ceppo, where there is a large free parking area. The route starts on a dirt road, enters a beech forest and continues on a marked path.

Practical tips: wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip as the last section can be slippery. Carry water and snacks; there are no services along the trail.

Ruzzo Waterfalls – Pretara (Isola del Gran Sasso)

  • Maximum drop: 16 m (Vena Roscia)
  • Source elevation: about 1,497 m
  • Duration: 1–2 hours round-trip
  • Difficulty: easy, family-friendly

How to get there: from Pretara follow the dirt road to the bridge over the Ruzzo river. From there a simple trail leads to the waterfalls and is accessible for children.

Practical tips: located inside the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, the gorge and limestone walls create striking scenery—ideal for photography. Visit in May–June when flow is greatest.

Valley of the Hundred Waterfalls – Cesacastina (Crognaleto)

  • Approximate number of cascades: about 100
  • Trailhead: Cesacastina, 1,140 m asl
  • Top elevation: up to 1,700–1,759 m (Amphitheatre of the Hundred Springs)
  • Duration: 3–6 hours depending on route
  • Difficulty: moderate / hiking; elevation gain 600–620 m; loop ~8.7 km

How to get there: park in Cesacastina and follow the marked trail that crosses beech woods, pastures and sandstone slabs toward the springs valley.

Practical tips: late spring (May–July) offers the best water flow and wild orchid blooms. Do not walk on wet slabs—they are dangerously slippery. Experienced hikers can continue up to the Amphitheatre of the Hundred Springs.

General practical advice

  • Gear: grippy hiking boots, lightweight backpack, rain jacket, water and snacks, power bank and camera/phone.
  • Timing: start between 9:00 and 10:00 to ensure good light and enough time for the return trip.
  • Safety: check the weather forecast; avoid river edges during heavy rain due to flash flood risk.
  • Parking: all three trailheads have free parking close to the start points.

These three outings suit different fitness levels, from easy family walks to longer mountain hikes. In spring the combination of strong water flow, green woods and blooming flowers makes every route particularly rewarding.
