Borgo dei Borghi is a format aimed at promoting Italy's historic villages, encouraging slow and sustainable tourism. Each year one village per region is presented and the public, together with a jury of experts, elects the winner in a final traditionally aired on Easter Sunday.
Cingoli, known as the "balcony of the Marche", overlooks the upper Musone valley and offers views that on clear days reach the Adriatic Sea. The historic center is largely enclosed by walls and unfolds through quiet alleys, squares and viewpoints. Highlights include the Town Hall and historic gates such as Porta Piana and Porta dello Spineto. Nearby, Lake Castreccioni and local culinary traditions—olive oil, cured meats and regional specialties—enrich the visitor experience.
Below is the list of villages that won the title over the years. Each represents a distinctive historic centre worth visiting outside peak season.
Timing: spring and autumn offer the best conditions to avoid crowds and enjoy mild weather. Check monument opening times and local event calendars in advance.
Getting around: choose slow mobility (walking, cycling or local transport) to fully appreciate historic centres; check traffic and parking availability on weekends.
Food & local products: seek traditional products and local workshops to experience authentic regional flavours. Many villages host markets and tastings that highlight local production.
