Spring is the perfect season to visit Basilicata's villages: longer days, mild temperatures and landscapes coming back to life. In a weekend you can combine medieval castles, volcanic lakes, panoramic hills and a peaceful Ionian coastline.
Castel Lagopesole (Avigliano): a Frederick II-era fortress perched on a hill with wide views. Inside there is a Romanesque church; surrounding woods are great for short spring hikes.
Rionero in Vulture and the Monticchio Lakes: compact historic centre, wineries producing Aglianico del Vulture and two crater lakes. Walk the lakeshores and visit small abbeys and medieval ruins.
Forenza: known as the “balcony over the Apulian plain,” it features stone alleys, scenic viewpoints and a lively central square ideal for slow walks and tasting local products.
Tricarico: a well-preserved medieval layout with Arab-Norman roots, a notable Norman tower and charming stairways; easy to pair with a trip to Matera or the nearby badlands.
Policoro: on the Ionian coast, offering quiet beaches in spring and nearby archaeological sites—an effective mix of sea and history.
Spring enhances Basilicata’s landscapes: hills turn green, skies are clearer and villages feel authentic without summer crowds. These towns are ideal for slow walks, historical sights and seasonal food experiences.
