History and description
Erected between 114 and 117 AD for the inauguration of the Via Traiana, from which it takes its name, connecting Benevento and Brindisi, the arch—built in limestone and clad in marble blocks—is about 15 meters high. Each façade features four circular half-columns with dedicatory inscriptions and a rich decoration depicting scenes of peace and war. Incorporated into the city walls during the Lombard period, it was then called Porta Aurea. Only later was it isolated again, undergoing various restoration works that today make it one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Curiosities
Known as one of the best-preserved Roman arches, it was admired for its beauty and painted by numerous artists. In particular, it was immortalized by Sebastiano Serlio and Piranesi in the 18th century for the visit of Charles of Bourbon.
Access
The site, already visible from the road, can be visited free of charge all day. Nearby is the Arch Museum, which requires a ticket for entry.
How to reach it
Located at the beginning of the Via Traiana, the arch can be reached by car, with parking available nearby, by bus (lines 12, 12 bis, and 14), or on foot from the central station.
Blending art, history, and architecture, the Arch of Trajan is one of the monuments that best define the identity of the territory and is therefore an unmissable destination for all visitors!
