Neapolis excavations in Guspini open for Monumenti Aperti

For the Monumenti Aperti initiative, the archaeological site of the large baths at Neapolis, near Guspini (SU), will be unusually accessible to visitors on Sunday 10 May.

Excavations begun in January 2026 include stratigraphic investigations and conservation works aimed at the restoration and stabilization of the monument, one of the few in Sardinia that still retains parts of its original roof. Archaeologists have uncovered original flooring and a Roman bathing basin.

What to see and why it matters

  • Large baths: evidence of multiple phases of use, later transformations and traces linked to an early Christian church in local tradition.
  • Roman flooring: recently exposed, it helps reconstruct the building's original layout.
  • Historic roofing: the restoration work will allow removal of scaffolding and improve public access.

Visitor information

  • Visit date: Sunday 10 May (special access for Monumenti Aperti).
  • Location: Neapolis archaeological area, Guspini (SU), Sardinia.
  • Access: guided or supervised routes compatible with ongoing excavation work; follow on-site staff instructions.
  • Project purpose: roof consolidation and conservation measures led by the Superintendency and funded by the Ministry of Culture.

The intervention is part of a broader plan to enhance southern Sardinia’s archaeological sites, financed with ministerial funds to ensure long-term protection and improved visitor experience.
