The Council of Ministers has awarded the Municipality of Ancona the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2028. Proposed by the Ministry of Culture, the designation launches a two-year planning phase aimed at enhancing the city's historical heritage, places of memory and cultural assets in the Marche region.
Ancona's candidacy rests on recognizable urban and territorial features: a historic port on the Adriatic Sea, architectural and archaeological landmarks, and a tradition of cultural and performing events. Notable local assets include the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, the Mole Vanvitelliana and the urban routes connecting the historic centre to the waterfront.
Early orientations of the cultural programme highlight several priorities:
Following the announcement, calls for projects and partnership agreements are expected between the municipal administration, the Marche Region, cultural institutions and local operators. The stated aim is to build an events and intervention calendar that extends beyond 2028, generating positive effects in employment, attractiveness and social regeneration.
For residents, cultural operators and visitors, the designation is an opportunity to explore the city's historical layers more deeply and to contribute to a collective project that places heritage, sustainability and creativity at its core.
