Alexi Worth in Naples: «Vortices», contemporary paintings in dialogue with ancient ceramics

Dates: 3 April - 5 July 2026

Venue: Gallerie d’Italia - Napoli (Intesa Sanpaolo museums)

The exhibition “Vortici. Alexi Worth in dialogue with ancient ceramics” marks the artist’s first show in Italy. Curated by Silvia Gaspardo Moro and Richard Neer, the project pairs nine paintings by New York-based Alexi Worth with a selection of vessels from the Collezione Caputi to explore the ritual and visual dimensions of the symposium.

Highlights

  • Nine paintings by Alexi Worth, notable for their linear drawing, restrained palette and psychological ambiguity.
  • Three red-figure kraters and one amphora from the Collezione Caputi, produced between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC in regions such as Athens, Apulia and Lucania (many finds from Ruvo di Puglia).
  • The installation emphasizes formal echoes — line, the weight of red clay tones and black contours — and the social implications of communal drinking practices.

Why see it

The show offers a compelling conversation between ancient objects and contemporary painting, suggesting how pictorial practice continues to engage with figuration, gesture and memory. Worth’s work foregrounds hand, mark-making and the tension between representation and abstraction, while the ancient ceramics provide a material anchor for reflections on ritual and collective imagery.
