Work has started to remove makeshift dwellings in the Tirone quarter, a central area of Messina with significant historical value that has long suffered decay. This operation represents the initial practical step of a broader plan to recover and enhance the neighbourhood's historical features.
What is happening
Historical value and challenges
Tirone hosts important heritage elements such as the remains of the sixteenth-century bastions commissioned by Charles V, the eighteenth-century Sergi staircase and several nineteenth-century houses. Numerous recovery proposals have been made over the years, but many have stalled due to administrative obstacles or controversies over alleged speculative development.
Past episodes include the establishment of the Stu Tirone in 2003 for post-earthquake recovery and its liquidation by the municipality in 2018. More recent ideas, including converting parts of the area into an urban park, have not progressed to implementation.
Outlook
The Commissarial Structure and the sub-commissioner for redevelopment have renewed attention on the area, aiming to pair the demolition work with a coherent enhancement plan. The arrival of earth-moving equipment is therefore an initial clearing phase intended to enable targeted conservation, restoration and public use interventions.
