David Riondino passed away on 29 March at the age of 73. An eclectic figure in Italian culture, he worked across music, theatre and television. His funeral will be held at the Church of the Artists (Chiesa degli Artisti) in Piazza del Popolo, Rome.
Born in Florence in 1952, Riondino was active from the 1970s onward in musical collectives and cultural initiatives. He contributed to satirical magazines such as Tango, Cuore and Il Male, and notably penned the hit song «Maracaibo», demonstrating a rare versatility between pop and critical satire.
He became widely known for his television characters and appearances, which blended irony and reflection. His film and stage work included collaborations with directors like the Taviani brothers and Marco Tullio Giordana, and partnerships with performers such as Paolo Rossi and Stefano Bollani.
Among his projects was the Scuola dei Giullari, an envisioned training network for songwriting and performance that remains an unfinished legacy. Colleagues remember him as a reference point for intellectual freedom and cross-genre creativity.
The funeral offers the cultural community an occasion to commemorate an artist who combined satire, music and poetry. In the months ahead, exhibitions, events or study initiatives may further explore and celebrate his contribution to Italian culture.
