International Chess Museum Giovanni Longo Opens in Marostica
Opening: Saturday, 16 May 2026. The new museum is located on the ground floor of the Castello Inferiore, overlooking the historic Piazza degli Scacchi in Marostica (VI), Italy.
This is the first museum in Italy entirely dedicated to chess, born from the donation of collector Giovanni Longo, Honorary Master of the Italian Chess Federation.
The collection
The museum displays more than 150 items spanning from the 18th century to the present, including chess clocks, handcrafted sets and rare collector's pieces.
- Europe: antique boards and historic pieces.
- America: stylistic variants and modern artifacts.
- Africa: artisanal sets with symbolic value.
- Asia: monumental sets and traditional materials.
Exhibits also feature a multimedia area with video stations on the history of chess and a display dedicated to the 17 world champions.

The museum offers a free app serving as an audio guide, providing detailed information on individual exhibits. The lay-out is designed to be accessible and engaging for both enthusiasts and general visitors.
Funding: the project was implemented by the Municipality of Marostica with the support of PNRR funds; total investment amounted to €668,000.
