Italy hides remarkable underground environments where water has carved caves, subterranean rivers, lakes and waterfalls. These five sites offer guided visits and equipped trails suitable for hikers, families and visitors interested in accessible speleotourism.
Grotta di Bossea (Piedmont)
Located in the Alps, Bossea Cave features canyons, underground lakes and waterfalls. The visit covers about 3 km round trip with a total elevation change of approximately 116 meters; guided tours last around 2 hours. Recommended for visitors with good mobility. Open mainly from March to November; closed in winter.
How to get there: by car from Cuneo (about 1 hour) via SS28 toward Frabosa Soprana.
Pertosa‑Auletta Caves (Campania)
In the Monti Alburni massif, visitors cross an underground river on flat-bottomed boats pulled by guides along an overhead rope system. The route combines boat passage and walking in galleries and includes an archaeological area with Bronze Age pile-dwelling remains. Constant temperature around 15 °C; suitable for all visitors.
How to get there: by car from Salerno in about one hour, exit at Polla and continue on SS19 toward Pertosa. Open year-round.
Falvaterra Caves (Lazio)
Where the Rio Obaco sinks into the ground among the Ausoni Mountains, Falvaterra offers a roughly 2 km itinerary. The first 250 meters are accessible to visitors with serious mobility limitations. The site is protected as a Regional Natural Monument for its pristine conditions.
How to get there: from A1 Rome–Naples, take the Ceprano exit, then SP toward Falvaterra. Parking near the entrance. Open year-round.
Frasassi Caves (Marche)
One of Europe's most extensive karst systems, shaped by water into monumental underground chambers such as the Abisso Ancona. The equipped route crosses large-scale environments; guided tours last about 75 minutes. Temperature is around 14 °C. Partial access for visitors with limited mobility is available up to the second hall (Sala 200).
How to get there: by car, exit Serra San Quirico on SS76 Ancona–Rome, then follow signs to Genga and Frasassi. Visitor center and parking in San Vittore di Genga. Open year-round.
Stiffe Caves (Abruzzo)
In the Velino‑Sirente Regional Park the Rio Gamberale flows through the cavity, offering a roughly 700‑metre route with rapids and an impressive internal waterfall. This resurgence marks where the river returns to the surface; visits typically last about one hour. Check opening hours and guided tour schedules before travel.
How to get there: follow directions to the Velino‑Sirente Regional Park and the village of Stiffe. Verify seasonal openings and guided visit arrangements.
Practical tips: wear non-slip footwear, bring a light jacket for the steady cave temperatures (around 14–15 °C), carry a torch only if requested by the guide, and follow site rules to protect fragile underground environments. Book guided tours in advance for groups.
