Historical conference at Palazzo Pretorio, Terra del Sole

On Saturday, 16 May 2026 at 10:00, Palazzo Pretorio in Terra del Sole will host the conference "1946 the year of choice - How Italy became a Republic." The event is organised by the Committee of Romagna Toscana for the promotion of Risorgimento values together with the Italian Mazzinian Association, the Pro Loco of the citadel and the National Association of War Invalids and Maimed.

Programme and speakers

The discussion will be introduced and moderated by Luigi Pieraccini. Speakers will examine the political, social and cultural steps that led to the 1946 referendum and the establishment of the Republic.

• Mario Proli (journalist and historian) on Giuseppe Gaudenzi, the tribune of the republican idea and local contributions to early republican life.
• Marco Valbruzzi (University of Naples Federico II) with the paper From subjects to citizens: the republic in Italy's history.
• Pietro Caruso (journalist, director of Il Pensiero Mazziniano) on The rebirth of a free Italian press.
• Alesandra Righini (Acli Women Emilia Romagna coordinator) on Women's suffrage and the women of the Constituent Assembly.
