A Weekend Through the Most Charming Villages of Messina Province

The north-eastern strip of Sicily hides many authentic villages: medieval cores, dramatic sea views and strong local traditions. This 2-day plan covers Castroreale, Novara di Sicilia, Savoca, Forza d’Agrò and Castelmola, designed to minimize travel time by car and maximize local experiences.

Day 1: Castroreale and Novara di Sicilia

Morning – Castroreale: start in this hilltop village in the Peloritani mountains. Highlights include the Cathedral with its unique camera-obscura sundial and the fine marble works of the local sculptural tradition. Wander the basalt-paved streets and enjoy the panoramic viewpoints toward Milazzo and the Aeolian Islands.

Afternoon – Novara di Sicilia: about 30 minutes by car, Novara features warm-hued sandstone buildings and artisan stonework. Visit the Cathedral and its crypt, the historic water mill Mulino Giorginaro, and, if time permits, walk towards Rocca Salvatesta.

  • Practical tip: the drive toward the Ionian side crosses the Nebrodi Park—stop at a lookout for simultaneous views of Etna and the Aeolian Islands.
  • Where to stay: consider lodging in Savoca or Sant’Alessio Siculo to be well placed for the next morning.

Day 2: Savoca, Forza d’Agrò and Castelmola

Morning – Savoca: famed as a film location, it preserves original spots like Bar Vitelli. Walk the Saracen street, visit the Church of San Nicolò and explore the village’s cinematic corners.

Lunch and transfer – Forza d’Agrò: a short drive away, this quieter village offers historic gateways like the Durazzo Arch and the Cathedral of Maria SS. Annunziata—ideal for a relaxed stroll and local tastings.

Afternoon – Castelmola: known as the “balcony over Etna,” it commands breathtaking views of Taormina and the volcano. Visit Piazza Sant’Antonio, reach the Norman castle ruins, and end with a break at Bar Turrisi to try the almond liqueur.

  • Local flavors to try: Maiorchino cheese, traditional granitas, and almond-based wines and sweets.
  • Photo tip: arrive at Castelmola about an hour before sunset for the best light on Etna and the coast.

Practical advice

  • Transport: car recommended (mountain roads with narrow stretches—drive carefully).
  • What to wear: comfortable shoes for uneven streets, and a light jacket for evenings.
  • Best season: spring and early autumn for pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds.
  • Suggested duration: 2 days to cover main sights; extend your stay for trekking or deeper food and wine experiences.

This short route through historic Messina villages combines landscapes, architecture and culinary traditions—perfect for a weekend of authentic Sicilian discoveries.
