Underwater surveys have brought to light rectangular structures, dry-stone walls and driven piles close to the shore at San Lorenzo Nuovo, interpreted as vats used for hemp processing.
Local accounts report use of these installations until the 1950s, although the constructions may be older and possibly linked to the former settlement of San Lorenzo Vecchio. Low water levels in 2023 allowed the Superintendency's underwater archaeology service to study the features more closely.
The Superintendency has placed a protective restriction on the area to preserve its layout and prevent removal or damage. Safety measures and warnings for bathers and boats are planned to reduce the risk of accidental interference with the submerged remains.
Research at Lake Mezzano has also restarted, focusing on protohistoric remains. These activities were among the subjects discussed at the "Water and the Etruscans" conference held on 10 and 11 April 2026, which gathered institutions and experts to examine ancient communities' relationships with lacustrine environments.
These discoveries contribute to the knowledge of traditional textile production — including retting, scutching and spinning — and represent significant examples of local industrial archaeology. Ongoing investigations aim at both scientific documentation and safeguarding of these underwater cultural assets.
