San Gimignano: refurbishment of historic pavements to protect the town

Autore: Redazione 28/03/2026 21:59

Restoring historic pavements to safeguard the village

The Municipality of San Gimignano has started a programme of maintenance and restoration on the historic pavements within the town centre, part of the UNESCO heritage area. The works aim to address wear and degradation caused by heavy foot traffic and time, restoring safe and appropriate surfaces.

The initiative is funded with municipal resources and amounts to approximately €135,000. The plan replaces damaged asphalt or degraded sections with materials that respect the historic setting, including traditional brick paving, travertine, pietra serena and architectonic concrete used in a compatible way.

Some stretches have already been restored, while additional works are underway or scheduled in the coming days to complete the programme.

  • Already completed works: via Folgore da San Gimignano, via Diacceto, via dei Marsili, via Mainardi, via Berignano, via Santa Caterina.
  • Ongoing or planned works: via Santo Stefano, Vicolo dell’Oro, via del Castello, via Quercecchio, via Costarella, via Palestro and Piazza della Cisterna.

The local administration emphasises that maintaining public pavements is key to enhancing the town's uniqueness and preserving residents' and visitors' quality of life. Works are being organised to minimise disruption, with signage and alternative pedestrian routes where needed.

Visitor information: temporary narrowings or detours may occur near active sites. Follow posted signs and municipal updates for schedules and closures. Residents can report damaged sections through official channels so the municipality can prioritise interventions.
