Portrait of Herbert Percy Horne Restored at Museo Horne

The 1908 portrait of collector and art historian Herbert Percy Horne (1864–1916), painted by English artist Henry Harris Brown, was restored and presented at Museo Horne in Florence on April 15, 2026. The conservation was funded by Friends of Florence with a generous donation by Catharin Dalpino.

  • Conservators: Daniele Rossi, assisted by Gloria Verniani and Umi Toyosaki.
  • Subject: Horne at age 44, depicted with objects from his collection (a Giambologna statuette and a Deposizione by Benozzo Gozzoli visible in the background).
  • Location: Museo Horne, Florence.

The painting entered the museum’s holdings in 1933 after the artist’s donation and represents a rare visual document for understanding Horne’s role as a collector and his ties to the Florentine Renaissance. Given the scarcity of portraits of Horne, this work has both documentary and artistic significance.

From a technical standpoint, the conservation included surface cleaning, reduction of oxidized and yellowed varnishes that dulled the palette, consolidation of the tacking margins while retaining the original stretcher and historic nails, a brush-applied semi-synthetic varnish, and final inpainting with stable mineral pigments. The gilded frame was cleaned with a tailored gel-emulsion to remove incoherent black deposits from carved floral motifs.

The restoration restored depth to the background, clarity to details and a renewed luminosity to the flesh tones, thereby highlighting the painting’s technical quality and expressive strength within the Museo Horne collection.

Significance: Beyond preserving a fragile work, the intervention reinforces the museum’s identity connected to its founder and the history of collecting in Florence, offering visitors a clearer view of Horne’s cultural legacy.
