History and description
Built between 1336 and 1338 by order of Azzone Visconti, Lord of Milan, the bridge was designed to connect Lecco to the Duchy of Milan by crossing the Adda River. In the Middle Ages, it also played an important role in trade. Originally made of stone, the bridge—almost 300 meters long—is characterized by eight arches and two watchtowers. Over the centuries, it underwent several restorations, to the point that today it can even be crossed by cars, allowing everyone to enjoy the surrounding panorama.
Curiosities
Also called Ponte Vecchio by locals, it has been not only a site of clashes during wars but also a source of inspiration for artists and writers, including Alessandro Manzoni. It is considered one of the longest medieval bridges in Italy.
Access
Open 24 hours a day, the bridge is freely accessible to everyone and also provides routes suitable for people with disabilities.
How to reach it
The monument can be reached by car via the A4 motorway toward Lecco, by train followed by a short walk from the central station, or by bicycle along the cycle path.
A masterpiece of medieval engineering and unique architecture, the Azzone Visconti Bridge is an unmissable stop, offering the perfect atmosphere for lovers of history, landscapes, and literature!
