History and Description
Founded by the Achaeans in the 7th century B.C., Metaponto was one of the wealthiest colonies of Magna Graecia, renowned for its agriculture and for being the home of Pythagoras, who established one of his philosophical and scientific schools here.
Abandoned during the Roman era, the site was rediscovered in the 1950s, and through extensive archaeological excavations, a park covering about 150 hectares was identified, including the Agora, the urban sanctuary, the Roman castrum, the Crucinia necropolis, and the remaining columns of the temple dedicated to Hera.
Closely connected to the park is the Metaponto Museum, which houses artifacts such as the frieze remains from the Temple of Athena.
Curiosities
Metaponto’s agricultural fame was celebrated even in ancient coinage, which depicted an ear of barley, as mentioned by Pliny the Elder.
The park, particularly around the area of the Tavole Palatine—which, according to legend, were planted by giants—has also served as a filming location for historical films and documentaries.
Access
The site is open from Tuesday to Sunday and can be visited for €8, which includes entry to both the park and the museum, with different rates depending on the type of visit and visitor category.
How to Get There
Located along a main road, the Archaeological Park of Metaponto is easily reachable by car via State Road 106.
Offering a complete archaeological experience, the Archaeological Park of Metaponto is a perfect destination for history lovers!
